For my series on the river rafts of the Vltava (the river that runs through Prague)I researched information at the Vyton museum in Podoli which sits above a small tavern in what was Podskali now Vyton.
I’m given to understand that most artist’s blogs are boring. What a challenge! – so here goes. I also understand that the reason they are boring is that their paintings are. Perhaps it’s because painting as such ie putting paint onto a surface to produce an image has been declared dead as an “art” form for some time. Well I’ve been painting for a heck of a long time – I’m never bored and I still get an adrenaline rush every time I pick up a brush.
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but on the other hand it’s never too late to learn. It occurred to me that in my long artistic career I had painted just about every subject matter possible in just about every medium except acrylics, which medium, everyone who knows me, I have scorned. There was something about it’s all encompassing effectiveness that grated. I love the history associated with oils and watercolours, two media which are so different yet so fit for purpose. I have always associated acrylics with the plastic age. I know, how Luddite can one get!
